IUPUI Professor Awarded Large Grant in Federal Stimulus Funding

Dr. Janice Blum, Associate Professor in Microbiology and Immunobiology, received the largest IU federal stimulus grant to-date, totaling $3.07 million, for her project "Poxvirus Modulation of Immune Responses." As of September 15, 2009, $31.9 million of Federal Stimulus funds has been awarded to Indiana University, and 66% awarded to the Indianapolis campus.

 Professor Harold Raidt Graduate Student Teaching Award

This award was named after Harold Raidt, Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology from 1935-1977.  Professor Raidt was the first Departmental faculty member to earn the IUPUI Campus Teaching Award.

This award was named for Dr. Randy S. Rosenthal, Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology from 1976 - 2004.  Dr. Rosenthal was a "champion of the students".  The recipient of this award will be chosen by the graduate students to recognize an outstanding faculty member who demonstrates exceptional concern for graduate students and their educational experience.

April 2009 - David Wilkes, M.D., has been named executive associate dean of research affairs at the Indiana University School of Medicine.   

Dr. Wilkes is the Calvin H. English Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.  He also is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and of microbiology and immunology.  His research specialty is immune mechanisms that contribute to lung transplant rejection.

April 2009 - Dr. Margaret Bauer was recognized and honored as a Trustee Teaching Award Recipient.  IUPUI's outstanding faculty were recognized and honored with high-level awards April 17th at the Chancellor's Academic Honors Convocation, a formal, robed ceremony presided over by Chancellor Charles R. Bantz and Vice Chancellor Uday Sukhatme.  The Trustees Teaching Award honors individuals who have a positive impact on learning through the direct teaching of students, especially undergraduates.  Award recipients must have demonstrated a sustained level of teaching excellence and must have completed at least three years of service at IUPUI to be eligible.

April 2009 - John O'Malley was selected as the winner of an Esther L. Kinsley Ph.D. Dissertation Award for 2008-2009.  This is the highest honor for research that Indiana University bestows upon it's graduate students.  An Awards Reception was held on April 15th on the Bloomington Campus.
